Adopt or Volunteer With These 5 Portland Animal Shelters

Whether you're looking to adopt a pet or volunteer as a dog walker, Portland animal shelters need help around the holidays.

PORTLAND, OR - There are plenty of animals who need loving, permanent homes in the Portland area. Even if you aren't ready to commit to adopting one, you can volunteer to house a foster pet or donate to the upkeep and care of these animals.

  • Oregon Humane Society has Adoption Hours from Sunday - Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Thursday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. You can adopt dogs, small pets, cats and even horses. If you're not interested in adding a furry friend to you family, you can sign up to volunteer with OHS and join a team of over 2,000 community members and animal lovers.

  • The Pixie Project is open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you'd like to adopt a pet, you can peruse the different available animals at the shelter. Volunteer as a dog walker, as cattery upkeep personnel or as animal transportation. You can also donate to the Pixie Project, either money or a used vehicle.

  • Family Dogs New Life Shelter is open Monday - Wednesday 12 p.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Adoptable dogs are listed on their site. You can donate to the shelter-they are a privately run nonprofit that receives no federal funding, so support from the community is imperative. In addition to fiscal donations, they also accept dog food, chew toys, treats and Advantage or Front line flea treatment.

  • Animal Aid PDX has plenty of pets in need of care and permanent homes. You can adopt a pet, but if you're not quite ready for that level of commitment, Animal PDX encourages people thinking about adopting to volunteer to foster an animal in need, this options functions as a trial run for potential future pet owners.   • Portland Animal Welfare was founded in 1999 and provides care to animals of the homeless. They do this through their Wellness Clinics where basic care is provided, such as exams, necessary vaccinations and medication refills. Portland Animal Welfare or PAW was voted Best Charity of the Year by Portland Mercury in 2015. Want to support the cause? You can donate to PAW, or check out some of their different volunteer opportunities. It's open from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday.
