Biscuits Cafe Slip Leads To $540,000 Award From Jury After Trial

Jennifer Cooper said Biscuits Cafe failed to put up a sign warning people of slippery floors. A jury agreed and awarded her $540,000.

PORTLAND, OR – It was July 13, 2014, and Jennifer Cooper and her husband were at the Biscuits Cafe in West Linn to celebrate their son getting his first paycheck. After finishing her meal, Cooper excused herself to go to the restroom.

On her way there, she slipped and fell on a wet floor, suffering injuries that she would say led to medical appointments, pain, horrible headaches, and having to stop working full-time.

In 2015, she filed a lawsuit against Biscuits and their parent company, arguing they'd been negligent by failing to put up a sign warning of the slippery floor.

After an eight-day trial i Multnomah County Court, a jury agreed with Cooper.

At the same time they agreed with the company's contention that Cooper bore some responsibility.

The jury awarded her $600,000 but found that Biscuits was 90 percent responsible and she was 10 percent responsible.

That means she gets $540,000.
