Clark County Measles Latest: 3 More Non-Immunized Children Sick

PORTLAND, OR – Clark County says that three more children who were never immunized against measles now have it. The news brings to 34 the total of people in Clark County to be diagnosed.

A 35th person – diagnosed in Oregon – has been lined to the outbreak.

A person with measles has been diagnosed with measles. Officials say that the case is linked to the Clark County measles outbreak, which officials said Friday, has grown to 34 confirmed cases and nine suspected.

Oregon health officials say that the state has a higher vaccination rate than Washington and, as a result, fewer people at risk.

Of the 34 confirmed cases in Washington, 30 are people who had not been vaccinated against measles and eight cases in which doctors have not yet been able to determine if the person had been vaccinated.

Of the 34, officials say that 24 of the people are between one and 10 years, nine are between 11 and 18, and one is between 19 and 29-years-old. One person is currently hospitalized.

On Tuesday, people who had been identified as possibly being exposed to measles received an automated call from Clark County Public Health. Not everyone who may have been exposed received the call.

Officials say that those who were called were asked whether they are showing symptoms of measles. The calls allow Public Health to more efficiently gather information about symptoms and identify possible new cases sooner.

Washington – particularly Clark County – has had a growing problem with declining immunizations rates.

The number of kindergartners who have been immunized for measles has dropped 12 percent over the past 15 years.

Last week, Clark County Council Chairwoman Eileen Quiring says hat the declaration is necessary to make sure that the health department has enough resources to stay on top of the outbreak.

That same day, officials announced that one of the contagious people was in Portland on Friday, Jan. 11 attending the Blazer game. Anyone who was at the Moda Center between 5:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. may have been in contact the person and been exposed.

Clark County Public Health has set up a hotline for people to call with questions related to the investigation. The number is 360-397-8021 and is staffed from 9 a.m. through 7 p.m. every day.
They also say that anyone who thinks that they may have been exposed and may have symptoms are urged to call their doctor before going so arrangements can be made to minimize the risk to other patients.
