Newfoundland Pitched for the Job of Oregon State Dog

Newfoundland dogs have a history in Oregon and could be named the state's official dog.

PORTLAND, OR - Members of the Oregon House of Representatives took the first step toward naming an official state dog.

The House Interim Committee on Rules heard a pitch on Thursday to name the Newfoundland state dog of Oregon, according to reports.

Becky Davis, who runs Notta Bear Newfoundlands kennel in Hubbard, is spearheading the effort to name the large fluffy waterdogs state dog.

Davis told The Oregonian that Newfoundlands are a clear choice for Oregon due to its history in the state. A Newfoundland traveled with explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to the Oregon territory in the early 1800s.

Only a handful of states have named official dog breeds.
