After a month-long series of delays, the commercial Dungeness crab season is getting underway. Fishermen can start pulling up pots Jan 4.

PORTLAND, OR – As far as commercial Dungeness crab fishermen in Oregon are concerned, T.S. Eliot was wrong. April is not the cruelest month, it's December.

The commercial Dungeness season was supposed to open on December 1. Then December 16.

It kept getting delayed because the crabs didn't have enough meat on them.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which regulates the industry, says that starting on Jan.1, fishermen can start setting their pots.

They can starting bringing them on Jan. 4.

This applies to areas north of Cape Arago; south of there, the crabs are still too small.

People should start seeing Dungeness in the stores by Jan. 10. Prices won't be set until the crabs start coming up.
