Oregon Tsunami Possibility Leads Manzanita Inn To Offer Go-Bags

"What is my responsibility as a business owner to help my customers in an emergency? says Janice Zagata, who co-owns an inn with her husband

PORTLAND, OR – What do you do when you own a hotel in an area that's expecting an eventual 9.0 earthquake and a tsunami? If you're Janice and Larry Zagata, you make sure that each of your inn's 10 rooms has an emergency go-bag for guests.

The Zagatas own the Ocean Inn in Manzanita.

They came up with the idea while attending a meeting of the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay where survival bags for families were discussed.

Zagata told the Emergency Volunteer Corps's Facebook page that she and her husband worked with Jason Johnson who owns Tonquin Trading Company in Seaside to make the bags.

They include first aid kits, water, food, blankets, emergency ponchos, hand warmers and 12-hour light sticks.

The bags also include a map to find your way to higher ground.

Scientists say that a major 9.0 earthquake has hit Oregon almost every 500 years and, by that measure, the area is overdue. Along with a major quake like that, a major tsunami is also expected.
