'Pet Rent' In Oregon May Be On Way Out If New Bill Becomes Law

A new bill in Salem would ban landlords from charging tenants extra rent if they have a pet.

SALEM, OR –You have a dog, cat, bird, bearded lizard. Your landlord isn't crazy about it and charges you extra rent for the animal.

Your pet isn't helping bring in any money to pay the rent, yet because of them, you find yourself paying more.

House Bill 2683 "prohibits landlords that allow pets from charging additional rent or fees based on possession of pets."

No hearing has yet been scheduled on the bill, which is before the House Committee on Human Services and Housing.

It's just one of several bills being introduced this session to try to rein in rents across the state. The legislature will likely also consider a proposal that would institute a form of rent control.
