Westbound 84 Reopens After Closure Stranded Hundreds Of Drivers

The 20-mile shutdown of WB 84 stranded hundreds of vehicles. ODOT finally reopened the stretch around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

PORTLAND, OR – It took almost 24 hours but Westbound 84 has been reopened. The approximately 20-mile closure stranded hundreds of vehicles overnight. There may have been more than 1,000 people trapped in their cars and trucks.

It was finally reopened around 7 p.m. Wednesday after all the vehicles were cleared. The closure was the result of crashes caused by the snow and ice.

It was the third day in a row that part of 84 had been closed.

Many drivers were forced into a position of having to balance keeping with warm and the need to conserve gas.

On Wednesday morning, deputies and officers from the Oregon State Police were finally able to reach stranded people and provide them with water and fuel.
