Cleese co-founded Monty Python in 1969 along with fellow Pythons Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman. He would star in some of the BBC series' most iconic skits, from the Ministry of Silly Walks to the Dead Parrot, while also featuring in the troupe's movies like "Quest for the Holy Grail," "Life of Brian" and "Meaning of Life."

Beginning in 1975, he starred as Basil Fawlty in the BBC's "Fawlty Towers," furthering his comedy acclaim on both sides of the pond.
