New U.S. 1 Traffic Pattern In Bensalem Starts Tuesday

Motorists are advised that navigation systems and traffic apps like WAZE and Google Traffic may not be updated in time for the shift.

BENSALEM, PA — A new traffic pattern on U.S. 1 in Bensalem between Old Lincoln Highway and Rockhill Drive is scheduled to start Tuesday morning.

The interim pattern will be on northbound U.S. 1 and require drivers heading for Street Road and the ramp to the Pennsylvania Turnpike toll plaza to use the right lane, PennDOT announced. It begins at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The new pattern will be a change from the one in place for the past several months, during reconstruction of the Street Road ramps, which has required northbound U.S. 1 motorists to stay in the left lane for access to the turnpike ramp.

Tuesday's change will come as the northbound U.S. 1 ramp from Street Road reopens. The ramp has been closed since Jan. 20 for construction.

The new, interim traffic pattern will allow crews to complete the remaining construction along the northbound side of U.S. 1.

Construction on the project's first stage in the area is expected to be finished in early February. Then, a new traffic pattern will be established to move two lanes of northbound traffic onto the new northbound lanes, including the northbound segments of new bridges over Street Road, the turnpike and the turnpike ramps.

The new pattern is tentatively scheduled to be put in place the weekend of Feb. 7-9.

In addition, single lane closures will be in place periodically on U.S. 1, Street Road and Bristol Road on Sunday, Jan. 26, through Friday, Jan. 31, from 8 p.m.-6 a.m. for bridge and roadway construction.

The work locations are:

  • Northbound or southbound U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway
  • Eastbound or westbound Street Road between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way
  • Bristol Road between Belmont Avenue and Old Lincoln Highway. Traffic will be controlled by flagging.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and slowdowns are expected to occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.

Motorists also are advised that vehicle navigation systems and traffic apps like WAZE, Google Traffic, and others, may not be updated in time for the traffic shift and that northbound drivers should follow the posted work zone signs for accessing the turnpike.
