PennDOT Gives Update On U.S. 1, Street Road Work

PennDOT has announced its schedule and closures for the rest of the winter on the last major stage of work rebuilding U.S. 1 in Bensalem.

BENSALEM, PA — PennDOT has announced that nighttime lane closures on U.S. 1 and Street Road in Bensalem will continue through the winter as work on the highway continues.

Crews are working to rebuild the southbound side of U.S. 1, as well as three bridges on the highway and the center section of Street Road. This marks the final major stage of the long-running project to widen and improve U.S. 1 in Bensalem.

This week, PennDOT announced the following work schedule for the rest of the winter:

  • On Sundays through Fridays, from 8 p.m.-6 a.m., there will be periodic single-lane closures on northbound or southbound U.S. 1 between Rockhill Drive and Old Lincoln Highway
  • During the same times, there will be periodic single-lane closures on eastbound and westbound Street Road between Old Lincoln Highway and Kingston Way

The ramp from westbound Street Road to southbound U.S. 1 will remain closed during southbound construction. Traffic that normally uses the ramp will continue west, then turn left on Old Lincoln Highway back to U.S. 1.

During the construction's final stage, two lanes of southbound U.S. 1 traffic have been shifted to the rebuilt middle during work on southbound lanes and U.S. 1 bridges over the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the turnpike ramps and Street Road.

Bristol Road also will remain closed to through traffic between Old Lincoln Highway and Neshaminy Boulevard until spring, PennDOT said.

The $95.1 million project is being financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. The Bensalem work is the first of three projects to rebuild and widen U.S. 1, replace aging bridges and install safety enhancements along a four-mile stretch from just north of Philadelphia to just north of Rt. 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne.
