BENSALEM, PA — Schools and government buildings were closed in and around Bensalem on Monday, as local officials responded after the first day of a winter storm blanketed the region with snow.

Meanwhile, authorities were urging residents to stay off of roadways that had become slick with ice. Bensalem Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo signed an emergency declaration, directing the township's emergency management teams to do everything needed to address the storm's impact.

Just before 10 a.m. Monday, Bucks County's emergency management team was reporting 119 calls to 911 and 18 traffic accidents since the storm began, with four of them involving injuries and one entrapment.

There were several traffic accidents reported Monday morning on U.S. 1, at least one of them near Hulmeville Road.

Meanwhile, ice and sleet, snow drifts and strong winds were making traffic elsewhere in Bensalem tricky, at best.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the National Weather Service was reporting that 4.5 inches of snow had fallen in Bensalem and 4 inches had fallen in Doylestown. Across the Delaware, 6.5 inches of snow were recorded in Ewing Township, N.J.

Meanwhile, the weather service was forecasting another heavy band of snow Monday, with Levittown in an area predicted to get another 4-6 inches of snow.

Bensalem Township School District schools were closed Monday due to the storm, with no at-home learning making it a true snow day.

At 11 a.m. Monday, PECO was reporting one small power outage in Bensalem, caused by a vehicle striking a power pole. Emergency managers in the area said they were keeping an eye out for more outages as snow caused limbs and other debris to fall.
