Power Outages Restored After Hail Storm Hits Region

Did any hail fall near you during Wednesday's storm? Also, 66,000 PECO customers were without power around noon.

More than 66,000 PECO customers were without power following an afternoon thunder and hail storm that moved through the Philadelphia region Wednesday.

By 4 p.m., that number had been reduced to 31,000 customers across PECO's service area. By 11 p.m., there were just 3,700 outages across the region.

The county with the most outages was Chester, where more than 20,000 were in the dark immediately following the storm. More than 19,000 in Delaware County were without power, 12,000 in Montgomery County and more than 9,000 in Bucks. Here is PECO's outage map for specific details.

Pea-sized hail was reported across the region, along with loud thunder, heavy rain and lightning.

Reports of hail have come in from Bucks and Montgomery counties, including the towns of Warminster, Perkasie, Newtown, Montgomeryville, Warwick and Hilltown.

As of 12:30 p.m., the storms were still moving through the area, but the hail had ceased.

Hail forms during severe thunderstorms during a process which causes water molecules to freeze before raining down, according to the Weather Channel.
