What better way to celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week than by winning an award?
Valerie Schmitzer, a teacher at The Goddard School in Doylestown, was named Teacher of the Year.
The local kindergarten teacher was awarded the honor by Goddard Systems, which is the franchisor of The Goddard School. There are more than 420 schools nationwide employing more than 10,000 teachers.

Schmitzer was honored for her “hands-on approach to creating a difference in the world,” according to a Goddard Systems press release.
The teacher and her students took part in the Alex’s Lemonade Stand program, raising money and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer.

The announcement of the award came during National Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs through May 8.
