Sheriff ‘Duke’ Gets to Stay on the Ballot

A Bucks County judge ruled the incumbent sheriff, Edward 'Duke' Donnelly, can remain on the May primary ballot even though his name has a royal ring to it.

A judge ruled on Tuesday that Bucks County sheriff, Edward Donnelly and his nickname “Duke” can remain on the May primary ballot.

Donnelly’s challenger, fellow Republican Tom Lingenfelter, wanted Donnelly kicked off the ballot for using a nickname that suggests a “hereditary distinction or nobility title,” Phillyburbs.com reports.

Bucks County Elections Director Deena Dean testified that at least 20 candidates could appear on the ballot with chosen nicknames in May. And Bucks County Judge Gary B. Gilman said, "If strikes me that if George Herman Ruth was running for office, then there would be no objection to him appearing on the ballot as Babe Ruth."
