In our series spotlighting small businesses near Horsham, we talk with orthodontists and business owners Dr. Gary Udis and Dr. Karen Conn.
There’s a story lurking behind the glass pane of every shop, and there’s oftentimes an innovative individual whose entrepreneurial spirit is helping to shape the town and the greater region.
Our small business series shines a light on local business owners in the community.
This week’s feature is not a business in Hatboro or Horsham, but the Jenkintown orthodontics practice serves the greater area.

When did you go into business?
“Dr. Udis started the practice in 1976, so if you live in the area, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen his work in the smiles of people throughout the community. Dr. Conn joined the office last year and the practice was re-launched as Udis & Conn Orthodontics.”
How did you come up with the name?
“We think that naming our practice after the doctors reflects our commitment to personalized, hands-on attention from the orthodontists at every stage of treatment. When a new patient comes in for a complimentary consultation, the patient actually meets with Dr. Udis or Dr. Conn. In an age when the dental profession is getting more corporate and business-oriented, we still take a family-friendly approach and build relationships with our patients and their families.”
Why start a business here?
“Dr. Udis and his wife live in the area, where they have raised three children. Dr. Udis has been the orthodontist of choice here for multiple generations (even within the same families)…and we’re just getting started. We have great relationships with the area’s dentists and we proudly serve patients from Jenkintown, Abington, Elkins Park, Wyncote, Cheltenham, Glenside and the surrounding communities.”
What business are you in?
“We are orthodontists who specialize in braces and Invisalign for children, teens and adults…so we are in the business of creating beautiful, healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. If it is being done in orthodontics, we do it!”
What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?
“Over the last year, we have made significant investments in cutting edge technologies throughout our office, including moving to digital patient charts and adding an iTero 3D Digital Scanner so we can take ‘goop-less’ impressions. We also launched a new website and blog. It was a challenge to incorporate these new technologies into an existing practice, but the benefits to our patients have made it worth it.”
What’s been your favorite moment/proudest achievement since opening?
“Even though we get to see it every week, there is nothing better than watching that life-changing moment when a teenager or adult gets their braces off. We get to see the physical, emotional and psychological impact that treatment has on patients at this moment and it is an exhilarating experience every time.”
How does your business give back/get involved in the community?
“We’re proud to support many organizations dedicated to the betterment of our area. We’ve recently sponsored events for the Abington Art Center, Rotary Club of Jenkintown, Jenkintown Community Alliance programs and the Kiwanis Foundation of Jenkintown. We also frequently support our patients’ charitable and community efforts. We have a lot of talented patients so we also love to support their sports teams and theater performances.”
