HATBORO, PA — A new restaurant that opened in Hatboro this week is offering something new for local food lovers, while reviving a favorite from the past as well.

Hungry Moon Foods is located at 36 S. York Rd. That's the former location of Village Pretzels.

The family-owned restaurant's featured item is empanadas, the classic, half-moon shaped Latin American comfort food.

But along with traditional Latin fare, the restaurant also will be bringing back soft pretzels, which were a staple at the location since Village Pretzels opened in 1972.

The menu at Hungry Moon is short and sweet, focusing on just a handful of favorites.

Here's a quick rundown of the some of the menu listings at the Hatboro restaurant:

  • Three styles of empanadas — white corn, plantain and Argentinian style wheat. They are $3.25 each and come with aji dipping sauces. The white corn empanadas are stuffed with beef, carrots, peas and rice, while the Argentinian style are available with a range of stuffings including buffalo chicken, beef, pulled pork, feta and spinach and cheesesteak. Empanadas may also be purchases as trays of a dozen or half-dozen.
  • Pan de yuca — $5. Yuca-flour bread stuffed with cheese.
  • Empanadas and soup combo — a choice of two empanadas and 12-ounce serving of the soup of the day for $10.
  • Soft pretzels — a regular soft pretzel is $1.25. For $2, you can get garlic and parsley, mixed seed and three-cheese soft pretzels. They come with mustard, with additional dipping sauces for 50 cents and marinated mushrooms or red peppers for 75 cents.
