Buy A Christmas Gift For A Needy Child In Bucks Co.

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree program has expanded online in 2020, with more shoppers avoiding stores.

LEVITTOWN, PA — The Salvation Army is giving people a chance to buy a Christmas gift for a Bucks County child who might not get one otherwise.

The nonprofit has partnered with Walmart on a program it calls Angel Tree. Through the program, they're hoping to buy gifts for more than 2.6 million children nationwide.

Those interested may donate at Walmart stores, or pick out a gift online. You can visit the Salvation Army website, punch in your zip code and click to view a gift registry for kids near you.

On Thursday, the Bucks County registry had requests for lots of winter coats and boots, along with Barbie dolls, Lego sets, skateboards, "Baby Yoda" toys and plenty more.

Once the gifts are purchased, Walmart ships them to the Salvation Army, which distributes them to the children who asked for them.

The Salvation Army has run the Angel Tree program with Walmart for decades, but says demand this year, during the coronavirus pandemic, is especially high.

"For more than 40 years, Walmart has worked with The Salvation Army to help keep hope alive for some of our country's most vulnerable populations and we are so grateful to count them as a trusted partner," said Kenneth G. Hodder, The Salvation Army's national commander. "In a year when so many traditions have been disrupted, I am hopeful that with the extra support from Walmart and their customers, we'll be able to ensure that children receive a warm meal and gifts under the tree this Christmas."
