Falls Township Officials To Hold Veterans Day Ceremony

At the newly refurbished doughboy statue, the ceremony will have a World War I theme.

FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — Officials in Falls Township plan a Veterans Day ceremony at the restored doughboy statue in Fallsington.

The brief, socially distanced ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the statue near Meetinghouse Square, the Fallsington Friends Meetinghouse and Historic Fallsington, Inc.

This year, the Falls Township Board of Supervisors hired a conservation company to refurbish the limestone statue. The company cleaned the statue and pedestal, strengthened the stone, repaired a crack and rebuilt a missing barrel on the statue's rifle.

The brick walkway and low wall at the statue were steam-cleaned to reduce soiling and biological growth.

Supervisors Chairman Jeff Dence, Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie and State Rep. John Galloway will be on hand to share perspective during the Veterans Day event. There will be World War I living historians in period dress who will present a medical display.

Historic Fallsington, Inc. Executive Director Kimberly Boice will speak about World War I in the Falls area. Representatives of American Legion Post 834 will participate in the event and its honor guard will fire three rounds.

The Spanish Flu outbreak during World War I prompted mask-wearing similar to what is in place now during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants will be wearing masks, which organizers say will fit in nicely with the theme of the event.

The doughboy statue was designed to honor veterans and casualties of World War I.
