LANGHORNE, PA — Families on the west coast soon will get to enjoy an outing familiar to those in Bucks County.

Sesame Place announced Monday that its second location in the United States will be in San Diego, Calif. The new park is scheduled to open in spring 2021.

"As we celebrate Sesame Street's 50th anniversary, we are excited to share the news of a major opportunity for kids and families to connect with and learn from the brand and its beloved characters," said Steve Youngwood, chief operating officer of Sesame Workshop.

"The opening of Sesame Place San Diego will give guests a unique and powerful way to experience Sesame Street, enable us to connect with even more families, and further our educational mission."

The Sesame Place in Langhorne opened in July 1980 and has been popular family destination for nearly four decades. The San Diego park will have many of the same features as the one in Langhorne, including family rides, water slides, live character shows, parades and interactive experiences.

Like the park in Langhorne, the one in San Diego will be a Certified Autism Center. The original Sesame Place was the first theme park in the world to earn that designation. It means staff are trained in autism awareness, special features are available and quiet spaces with adjustable lighting and comfortable seating are built into the park's design.

Sesame Place San Diego will be located on the site of the current Aquatica San Diego.

SeaWorld, an official partner of Sesame Place, has opened themed Sesame Street sections of several of its parks, including ones in San Diegos, Orlando and San Antonio.
