BRISTOL, PA — If you've ever dreamed of working on the railroad, an upcoming info session could get you rolling down the right track.

"Career Tracks in the Railroad Industry," will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Bucks County Community College's Epstein Campus in Bristol. It's located at 1304 Veterans Hwy.

The session is designed to explain opportunities in the railroad industry ahead of an introductory course that will start at the campus on Feb. 15. The college's Locomotive Engineer and Conductor Basic Training Program, in partnership with NJ Transit, is an 11-week course.

The 65-hour course prepares students to apply for a training program to become an engineer or conductor on a freight or passenger rail line. Tuition is $999. Those who register at the Feb. 1 information session will receive a 10 percent discount.

  • Career opportunities in the railroad industry
  • Duties and responsibilities of locomotive engineers and conductors
  • Communication: radio, face-to-face, fax and phone
  • Signal system: Hand signals and train movement
  • Rail operations procedure, safety and rules
  • Yard switching operations, both freight and passenger
  • Hazmat materials: Class, group, practices and handling rules

The college cites U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures saying engineers can earn a training salary up to $53,000 a year. After training and certification, which takes about two years, salaries range from $60,000 and higher.
