LEVITTOWN, PA — Schools and government buildings were closed throughout the Levittown area on Monday, as local officials responded after the first day of a winter storm blanketed the region with snow.

Meanwhile, authorities were urging residents to stay off of roadways that had become slick with ice.

"The mixing in of sleet and freezing rain is making for poor road conditions, so if you have to be out there, take it slow," the Middletown Township Police Department said in a social media post. "Township and PennDOT plow trucks are out there clearing roads and will be throughout the day."

Just before 10 a.m. Monday, Bucks County's emergency management team was reporting 119 calls to 911 and 18 traffic accidents since the storm began, with four of them involving injuries and one entrapment.

No roads had been closed and there were fewer than 100 power outages being reported.

Multiple traffic incidents were being reported on U.S. 1 by mid-morning Monday.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the National Weather Service was reporting that 4.5 inches of snow had fallen in Bensalem and 4 inches had fallen in Doylestown. Across the Delaware, 6.5 inches of snow were recorded in Ewing Township, N.J.

Meanwhile, the weather service was forecasting another heavy band of snow Monday, with Levittown in an area predicted to get another 4-6 inches of snow.

On social media, multiple residents were reporting sleet in Levittown early Monday.

Police said wind gusts also were blowing snow onto major roadways. They warned this often happens on Rt. 213 near the Reedman Toll test track and encouraged anyone who sees snow drifts causing a hazard on major roadways to report them.

Neshaminy School District, Bristol Borough School District and Bristol Township School District canceled in-person classes for Monday and Monday was a grading day for Pennsbury School District.

Officials in Falls, Middletown, Bristol Township and Bristol Borough all had declared snow emergencies in advance of the snowfall, which began around midday on Sunday, continued into Monday morning and was not expected to stop until Tuesday.

Locally, Waste Management announced that it would not be picking up trash and recycling on Monday due to the weather. The company, which serves Falls, Middletown and Bristol townships and other municipalities in the Levittown area, planned to run routes one day behind its usual schedule.

At 9:30 a.m. Monday, PECO was not reporting any significant power outages in Levittown. Emergency managers in the area said they were keeping an eye out for outages as snow caused limbs and other debris to fall.
