Volunteers Collect 6,710 Pounds of Drugs

The Semi-Annual Medication Take Back Day Saturday, by all measures, was a great success.  

“From my travels to Giant in Levittown, Tullytown, Falls, Lower Makefield, Yardley, and back,” reported Kathy Kraeck, Community Mobilizer Pennsbury LYFT, “it appeared that all the sites were quite busy. In fact, we received word from the county detectives, that the collection totaled 6,710 [pounds] in Bucks County, up from 5,304 [pounds] six months ago!”

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., people with unwanted or expired medications handed them over to adult and youth volunteers at locations throughout Bucks County.

“From my own conversations,” Kraeck wrote in an email, “people were very pleased about the program, and happy to hear about the local permanent boxes where medications can be dropped off anytime.”

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, a release from Bucks Promise for Youth and Communities states. According to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.
