Beef & Beer Benefit Planned for 'Matey'

Family and friends of 26-year-old Shawn Matey are trying to raise money for a new handicapped-accessible van.

A beef & beer benefit for 26-year-old Shawn Matey is planned for Saturday April 20, at the Elmwood Park Zoo.

Matey, 26, is confined to a wheelchair as a result of his cerebral palsy. He was born three months premature and has endured multiple painful procedures and surgeries for his condition.

Matey's family currently transports him in a van that is more than 15 years old and needs to be replaced. A new van will cost between $40,000 and $60,000 and so a benefit was planned to raise money for the effort.
