NORRISTOWN, PA — A major redevelopment project has received an important funding boost in downtown Norristown.

Gov. Tom Wolf has authorized $1 million to fund the revitalization of a property at the intersection of Main and DeKalb streets. Officials with a new vision for the downtown area are hopeful they can build "quality housing" as well as add retail options to the property.

Details on exactly what this redevelopment might look like remain undetermined, but the municipality has published a request for proposals that touts the opportunities offered by the space. This report notes the revitalization trends ongoing in the area, mentioning Five Saints Distilling, the eSports facility proposal, and the new Justice Center.

This new potential project continues "a strong trend of new development and creative reuse projects throughout the Municipality," officials note.

“All residents of and visitors to Norristown will benefit from the investment into the redevelopment of this site," said Rebecca Swanson, the executive director of the Redevelopment Authority of Montgomery County.

The municipality purchased the lots at this intersection back in 2019.

It's one of several new developments that could soon be underway in Norristown. Discussions over the old Baer Furniture building remain ongoing, and municipal council heard a presentation on a 98-unit apartment complex with retail shops on Lafayette Street earlier this week.

The deadline for project proposals from developers for the Main Street lot is March 1.
