Elmwood Zoo Becomes First Zoo In America To Go 'Dog-Friendly'
Elmwood Park Zoo continues to push the envelope with its unique programming.

NORRISTOWN, PA — After a year of planning, redesigning and safety considerations, the Elmwood Park Zoo made a major announcement Friday: Pups can now experience the wonders of the animal kingdom, too.
Elmwood is the first zoo in America to offer such canine programs for pets, not just service dogs, according to zoo representatives.
"We recognize that if you have a love of wildlife, there's a good chance that you're a pet owner too," said Al Zone, Elmwood Park Zoo's executive director and CEO.

Dog admission will only be available on select dates and events, including the Yappy Hours and summer Dog Days. Dog Days will start in March, on certain Wednesday and Friday afternoons (a schedule is available here). Total dog capacity is limited to ensure safety, and and parts of the zoo will be closed to the pups: the bird exhibit, the bison feeding deck, and the barnyard.
Furthermore, for dogs to attend zoo events, an online application must be completed on their behalf, including medical records and proof of vaccinations. The zoo said it worked carefully with its animal care veterinary team to put together rules and regulations that would keep dogs and zoo animals safe.

To test things out, the zoo ran a trial visit with dogs owned by zoo employees.
"Canines of all shapes and sizes got an up-close view of the zoo's giraffes, zebras, jaguars and more," zoo organizers said. "The zoo's animals showed a bit of interest, and overall it was a harmonious meeting."
It's not the first time the zoo has made history with its unique programming. It became the world's first Certified Autism Center zoo in 2018.
