Elmwood Zoo's Gerald The Giraffe Swiftly Recovering
Elmwood's beloved giraffe, Gerald, has had a tough few weeks. But things are looking up.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Great news out of Elmwood Park Zoo: one of the zoo's most popular and beloved residents could return to his exhibit and public feedings this weekend as he recovers from his latest medical issue.
Gerald the Giraffe, well known for his personality during public feedings and "Breakfast with Giraffes" and for his tendency to drool, is battling back from a reaction he suffered following an insect bite or sting.

The incident occurred around two weeks ago, zookeepers said, and caused swelling around his eye. As the swelling went down, it became clear that the tissue under jaw had become "severely compromised" and was not immediately healing. But now, things have taken a turn for the better.
"Gerald has steadily improved over the last two weeks thanks to the hard work of the Keeper Team," the zoo said Friday. "They've been absolutely diligent in making sure that he receives all of his medications and treatments."

They also credited a donation of fresh mulberry browse from PECO (the "sugar" to help Gerald take his medicine) in assisting his recovery.
Gerald and the other giraffes spent more time back on exhibit this week. While the zoo feared that more aggressive treatment might be required, which could be dangerous and tricky because of how difficult anesthesia can be with giraffes and their unique anatomy, it appears that will no longer be necessary.
