MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor is back in the national spotlight. The longtime lawyer will co-lead the defense of former President Donald Trump during his coming impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate.

The district attorney from 2000 to 2008, Castor's tenure in Montgomery County became the focus of national attention during Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial just a few years ago.

When Andrea Constand alleged in 2005 that Cosby sexually assaulted her, Castor did not believe there was sufficient evidence. He told Cosby he would not prosecute him, and Cosby later attempted to frame this agreement as a plea deal which granted him immunity from prosecution. The more damning evidence in that case, Castor said, came to light long after Castor was out of office.

"I consider it a privilege to represent the 45th President," Castor, now 59, said in a statement released by Trump's team. "The strength of our Constitution is about to be tested like never before in our history."

On Jan. 12, Trump became the only president in the history of the United States to be impeached twice, following charges from House Democrats and some Republicans that his words inspired the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol. The charge of "incitement of insurrection" came following months of long-since debunked complaints of fraud related to his election loss to President Joe Biden.

Castor expressed confidence in Trump's victory in the trial, saying that Constitution was on their side and that it is "is strong and resilient."

"A document written for the ages, and it will triumph over partisanship yet again, and always," he said.

A two-thirds majority of the Senate is needed to vote to convict Trump. While Trump is already out of office, a conviction would prevent him from running again in 2024, as rumors have indicated he might.

The two-thirds majority appears highly unlikely, as only a small handful of Republicans have expressed support for moving forward with the trial.

Castor also served as acting attorney general of Pennsylvania for a brief period of time following the resignation of Kathleen Kane amid her 2016 scandal. He ran for Montgomery County district attorney again in 2015, but lost to current DA Kevin Steele.

Joining Castor in leading Trump's defense team is David Schoen, who represented Trump aide Roger Stone in his trial, and had been slated to represent convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein before his death in prison.
