Markley Street Reduced to One Lane Saturday

PennDOT advises finding an alternate route through Norristown while crews install underground pipes under Markley.

According to PennDOT, Markley Street will be reduced to one lane between Elm Street and Harding Boulevard on Saturday, April 27, while work crews install an underground drainage pipe 15 feet under the street.

Flaggers will be directing traffic in both directions starting at 7 a.m. and continuing through to 7 p.m. Drivers can expect back-ups and delays on Markley and connecting roadways during that time.

The pipe installation is part of stage one construction on the $20.8 million Markley Street Improvement Project that began in February 2013. The project aims to improve 1.1 miles of Markley Street between Elm Street and Johnson Highway, and a half-mile stretch of Johnson Highway between Markley Street and DeKalb Street. Construction is scheduled to finish in fall 2016.

The Markley Street Improvement Plan includes:

  • Rebuilding the street to provide one lane in each direction plus a center lane for left turns;
  • Adding recessed parking bays in residential areas;
  • Installing trees and decorative pedestrian street lights;
  • Building an off-street parking lot at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Markley Street;
  • Upgrading traffic signals;
  • Installing new curb ramps; and
  • Adding Intelligent Transportation System components.

According to PennDOT, J.D. Eckman of Atglen, of Chester County, is the general contractor on the $20,825,701 contract that is financed with 80% federal and 20% state funds. The project is the first of two to improve the Markley Street Corridor. A second project to rebuild Markley Street from Main Street to Elm Street is presently in engineering design. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2015.
