Several thousand more mail-in ballots were received in Montgomery County Wednesday, increasing the total number to 243,408. The number counted as of shortly before midnight Wednesday sat at 230,418.
"We ask for your patience," Commissioner Ken Lawrence said Wednesday afternoon. "We remain committed here in Montgomery County that we will count each and every ballot that we receive."
Officials said Tuesday night it could take them 40 hours to count all the mail-ins, meaning that the exact final tally might not be available until around 2 p.m. Thursday. They reiterated Wednesday afternoon that this count should be complete within 24 hours. Updates have been released by the voter services office on the hour since shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Major races in the county have already been called, such as U.S. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean's victory over Kathy Barnette in Pennsylvania's 4th, which covers most of the county. The race was not close, with tallies Wednesday night showing Dean at just over 255,000 votes to Barnette's roughly 177,000.

That's despite a lawsuit filed by Barnette and the Montgomery County GOP on Tuesday against Montgomery County, claiming that elections officials broke the law by notifying voters of errors on their ballots and allowing them to correct their mistakes. The county maintains they did nothing wrong.

Other races were still too close to be called as the final tallies came in early Thursday:

While some races are already determined, getting the exact count right is vitally important for the outcome of the presidential election, which is still up in the air and which could still hinge on Pennsylvania.
Former Vice President Joe Biden's lead over President Trump is notably wider than the margin Hillary Clinton's victory here in the heavily Democratic county in 2016. In fact, Biden already leads by 12,000 more than Clinton won by here, which was a tally of 256,082 to 162,731.
The historic election saw 508,442 voters cast ballots in Montgomery County, or 82 percent of all registered voters, which far outstripped 2016's 77 percent and 2008's 73 percent in the county.
While the huge in-person turnout led to long lines and some related confusion, with some residents waiting for hours on a cold and windy morning Tuesday, there were no major issues in Montgomery County.
"I'm happy to report we did not have any major disruptions at the polls," Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh said.
