Outrunning Senior Hunger 5K goes Virtual

Montco SAAC to Safely Host Fundraiser for Meals on Wheels Remotely

The Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County is hosting its 10th Annual Outrunning Senior Hunger 5K & Fun Mile from October 10th - 17th. Due to COVID-19, this year’s 5K and Fun Mile will be held virtually.

Montco SAAC, a senior centric nonprofit that consists of two senior centers, an inter-generational art center, and the largest Meals on Wheels program in Montgomery County, has served older adults across the region for 55 years. The organization counts on the annual race to help bolster funds to ensure continued support for those who depend on their services, many of whom have been made especially vulnerable by the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has been a truly difficult time for all, but it has also brought out the best in both our team and our community”, says Whitney Lingle, Montco SAAC’s Executive Director. “We’ve adapted by taking our daily senior center programs online, providing social services over phone and email, and having grab n’ go meals available for those who normally take advantage of lunches at our center”.

But one the most impacted parts of the organization has been its Meals on Wheels program. To cut down on the seniors’ exposure to volunteers, the program has gone from delivering meals five days per week to delivering a week’s worth of meals in just one day. “This has called for longer routes for our volunteer drivers as well as flexibility and modified workloads for our dedicated Meals on Wheels staff. We’re fortunate to be able to continue our service during these uncertain times, and we hope to can continue serving our seniors for another 55 years”, says Lingle. The program has delivered 76,735 meals to home bound seniors since the beginning of the pandemic.

This year’s Outrunning Senior Hunger 5K and Fun Mile will take place safely and virtually via an app, which will give participants mile mark announcements, virtual cheers and much more. Participants may take part in any location, and prizes will be given to the top finishers of each age group. Those interested in supporting the organization may register at runsignup.com. Participants who do so by 9/15 will receive a $5 registration discount.
