New Details As Brother, 13, Charged In Montco Girl's Death

Security footage shows the teen holding the weapon with his arm extended, apparently pointing it at his younger sister, the complaint says.

COLLEGEVILLE, PA — Friday morning should've been a quiet weekday morning like any other in a leafy cul-de-sac tucked up near the banks of Perkiomen Creek in Collegeville.

But the lives of an entire family were shattered forever by a single gunshot. And while a timeline of events has been cobbled together with the help of interviews and security footage, investigators still have no clear answer as to why 12-year-old Jasiyah Vazquez is dead, allegedly at the hands of her 13-year-old brother, Jah'sir.

It all began at some point before 7:51 a.m. on the 100 block of Larchwood Court, not far from the Perkiomen Trail and a short walk to Collegeville's 2nd Avenue.

According to a criminal complaint, Daisy Vasquez, the mother of the two children, asked Jah'sir to go retrieve her handgun from their vehicle outside. She later told police she wanted Jah'sir to bring the weapon to the safe inside, and that this was something she frequently requested of her son. The last time she'd asked Jah'sir to retrieve the weapon was two weeks earlier, on March 5, the complaint states.

Police have not said why she asked a child to handle the firearm. She told investigators that she has had both of her children with her at a firing range.

However, Jah'sir had refused to handle the weapon in the past because he was "nervous about the gun," and that this nervousness persisted to the present day, according to the criminal complaint.

The weapon, a CPX-2 9mm, was legally registered to Daisy, police said.

When Jah'sir came back inside with the gun, the home security footage shows him holding the weapon with his right arm extended, apparently pointing it at his younger sister, the complaint states.

A single shot was fired and hit Jasiyah, police said. Jah'sir said it was an accident, and that he did not point the gun at his sister, according to the criminal complaint. He later said he may have, but did not have a clear memory of those moments, police said.

Daisy was running water for the shower went the shots went off, she said. She initially told police that she had been the one to accidentally shoot Jasiyah, but later changed her story and confirmed that it was Jah'sir, authorities said.

Jah'sir, meanwhile, was arrested later on Friday and charged with third-degree murder. He'll face those charges in adult criminal court, District Attorney Kevin Steele said.

He was taken to Montgomery County Juvenile Detention Center. A preliminary hearing is set for March 28.
