UM Teen Was Trying to Escape Punishment When She Fell to Her Death

The 14-year-old girl was sent to her room by her foster parents and was attempting to lower herself down from the window using a makeshift rope.

According to Philly.com, the 14-year-old girl who tragically fell to her death from an 8-story window in the Marquis Apartments in Upper Merion on Tuesday, April 9, was trying to lower herself to the roof below using a rope she crafted of shoe laces and power cords. She had reportedly been sent to her room by her foster parents as punishment. Police reportedly found the makeshift rope still tied to a heater in the room when they responded to the scene.

"The makeshift rope extended from her window down to about 10 feet off the roof," Upper Merion Police Chief Tom Nolan told Philly.com "It is our belief that she fell while exiting the window, because we do not believe the makeshift rope would have remained intact with her weight on it."
