Hero Cop Rescues Ducklings From Sewer

Tragedy was narrowly averted after the ducklings fell through the sewer grate.

UPPER ST. CLAIR, PA - James Johnston is a hero cop. When an upset woman called for help after she saw a family of ducklings fall through a sewer grate, Johnston jumped into service, climbed into the sewer (ewww!) and pulled the ducklings to safety.

After scooping up the ducklings, Johnston and Upper St. Clair animal control officer Donald Cooley reunited them with their mother, who was not cited for child neglect.

Johnston was unavailable for comment Thursday. But Upper St. Clair Police Lt. Jonathan Wharton told Patch that a young woman saw the ducklings fall into the sewer and called the department.

“She was very upset,” Wharton said.

Johnston, who joined the force in December, volunteered to go into the sewer to get them. It was his first ducking retrieval experience, but Wharton said Upper St. Clair police occasionally are called upon to perform similar rescues.
