Heinz Center, Soldiers & Sailors Ceremonies Among Pittsburgh Area Memorial Day Events
Many communities are marking the day with parades, services.

UPPER ST. CLAIR, PA - There will be no shortage of ways in western Pennsylvania to pay tribute on Memorial Day those in the military who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Here’s a Patch-compiled guide to some of the activities that are planned:
- In Peters, the annual Memorial Day Parade organized by VFW Memorial Park Post 764 begins at 9 a.m. at Peters Township Middle School. The parade route is along East McMurray Road to the post home at 460 Valley Brook Road. A service typically takes place at the Post 764 war memorial.
- The John Heinz History Center in the Strip District will hold a flag ceremony at noon in the center’s Great Hall. Local veterans and museum visitors will unfurl a 36-foot American flag, sing the National Anthem,hold a moment of silence for those who died for their country and then refold the flag.
- Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Oakland holds its annual Memorial Day ceremony from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the hall and outside on the lawn. There will be a reflective ceremony, patriotic music performances, children’s activities and a raffle to benefit the hall and museum.
- Lawrenceville renews a century-old tradition with its annual Memorial Day parade, which begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of 40th and Butler Street. The parade will be about 45 minutes long and conclude at Allegheny Cemetery for a ceremonial wreath laying.
- West View’s Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Highland Avenue and Perry Highway and ends with memorial service at VFW Post 2754 on Perry Highway.
- Cranberry’s ceremony will take place Sunday May 28 at 1 p.m. Presented by Cranberry Township VFW Post 879, the 45-minute event will take place at the veterans memorial at North Boundary Park on North Boundary Road.
- The 84th South Hills Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. in Brookline, proceeds along Brookline Boulevard to Domont along, Pioneer Avenue, West Liberty Avenue and Washington Road before ending with services at Mount Lebanon Cemetery.
- Munhall’s Memorial Day Parade leaves Steel Valley High School at 9:30 a.m. and will travel down Main Street to the Homestead Cemetery. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. at the Civil War Memorial.
