Quonnie Historical Society In Charlestown Announces Summer Talks

Events are planned at the Quonochontaug Grange in July and August.

CHARLESTOWN, RI — The Quonochontaug Historical Society has announced its lineup of summer presentations. Quahogs, a would-be nuclear power plant, and aquaculture are on the agenda. Four in-person events (yay!) will be held at the Quonnie Grange on Rt. 1 from July 14 to August 25.

Unvaccinated persons are asked to wear masks. The events will be recorded and posted to YouTube for those who can't attend in person.


July 14, 7 p.m.: Quonochontaug Visionary (QHS’s Steve Young ) • In the 1920s, Howard Thorp acquired the land which would become much of the present-day Quonnie. Learn about his vision of the perfect seaside community.

July 28, 7 p.m.: Nuclear Energy and Ninigret Park (Marine biologist Art Ganz) • Learn how the Charlestown Naval Airbase almost became a nuclear power plant.


August 11, 7 p.m.: Rhode Island and Aquaculture (Jerry Schubel, president emeritus of the Aquariam of the Pacific) • Discover how we can use the oceans to contribute to society without causing environmental degradation and how aquaculture can thread the needle.

August 25, 6:30 p.m.: QHS annual meeting followed by A Day in the LIfe of a Quahogger (Professional bullraker Jody King) • Also known as the “King of the Bay,” Jody King is not just any Quahogger. He has had over 30 years’ experience harvesting quahogs on the Narragansett Bay.


The QHS says it welcomes new members.
