Candidates must be of good character and pass a rigorous screening process to be offered admission to the state police training academy.

SCITUATE, RI — Do you have what it takes to be a Rhode Island State Trooper? If so, be advised — state police have launched a recruitment drive and are looking for top candidates.
An applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 35. A high school education or GED is required. A criminal conviction or felony is disqualifying. An applicant must display good personal conduct, be a citizen of the United States, and possess good eyesight and hearing. Recruits need a valid driver’s license, or be willing and eligible to obtain one.
Candidates must undergo a physical test that involves sit-ups, pushups, a 300-meter run, and a 1.5-mile run. Those still in the game will undergo a written examination, a structured oral interview, a background investigation, a psychological examination, and a medical examination. A conditional offer of employment potentially opens the door for an applicant to attend the Rhode Island State Police Training Academy.

However, there's more. Recruits will be assigned a mentor to help them prepare for the academy. Anyone who fails to show up for five mentorship appointments gets tossed from the list.
Rhode Island State Police have special rules about tattoos and body art. No tattoos can be visible while in uniform. However, a flesh-colored sleeve can be used to conceal arm tattoos. Tattoos cannot be located on the head, face, or neck; inside the eyelid, mouth or ears; or on the wrists, hands, or fingers. Tattoos that are offensive are not permissible at all. These include but are not limited to tattoos that are extremist, indecent, sexist, or racist.
