Weather

40th Anniversary of the Blizzard of '78!

Can anyone say 'brr'?

February 6, 1978, began bright and sunny according to my mother. There had been conflicting forecasts on whether or not it would snow, but when the weather appeared calm, everyone went about their day.

My mother brought my older sister to school and started her chores: washing dishes, vacuuming, laundry...but then, she looked out the window and saw...

SNOWMAGEDDON! (I always wanted to say that!)

No, seriously, she saw snow pouring from the sky like it was going out of style, so she quickly bundled up my two-month-old self, put me into the car, and drove to the school. She had to force them to release my sister, and off to the market we went before going home and battening down the hatches. Thank God she was so wise!

As we all know, RI received 3-4 inches per hour at the height of the storm, dumping up to 40 inches in some towns. There was thunder and lightning, and the wind gusted to hurricane-force in some locations! The storm even had an eye-like formation in its center and lasted for 33 hours, costing nearly $2 billion dollars in damage. Thank God that hasn't happened since, and thank God that we have better technology now, to prepare us should we ever face another snowpocalyps! (I always wanted to say that too!)

Here's a piece of trivia for you: did you know that the blizzard had a name? It was dubbed 'Storm Larry', by the state of Connecticut! They should've named it 'Frosty' instead, or even better, 'Jack'! (As in Jack Frost? Ha!)

Anyway, I have one complaint about it all: since I was only two months old, I missed the whole thing! I just laid there in my crib, completely oblivious. What kind of survival story is that? *sigh!*
