Bomb Squad Responds To Live Grenade Found In Smithfield

A live grenade was found in the front yard of a Green Avenue home on Sunday.

SMITHFIELD, RI—A neighborhood was closed off and several houses evacuated on Sunday morning for about an hour and a half after a hand grenade was found in the front yard of a home located at 27 Green Avenue.

According to Smithfield Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Quattrini, the owner of the home called the police after finding the grenade while doing yard work. Firefighters responded to the scene after getting a call for assistance from the Smithfield Police Department at approximately 11:35 a.m.

After confirming the object was a grenade, the Rhode Island State Bomb Squad was called in and discovered the device was active through an x-ray. The bomb squad secured the grenade and brought it down to their facility to detonate it.

Where the grenade came from is still unknown and remains under investigation by the Smithfield Police Department.
