Climate Action RI Protests Outside Chase Bank In Smithfield

The activists held up signs and delivered a book on climate change to the branch manager.

SMITHFIELD, RI — Climate Action Road Island (CARI) gathered outside the new Chase Bank location in Smithfield Monday to protest the company's role in funding fossil fuels.

The protest involved activists holding up signs and delivering the book "The Uninhabitable Earth, Life After Warming" by David Wallace Wells to the branch manager.

"The CARI Stop Chase Team gathered in front of the new Chase Bank Branch 0n Rt. 44 in Smithfield to send the message to Chase Bank that funding the Line 3 Tar Sands Oil Pipeline as well as all fossil fuel industry funding is unacceptable," said the organization in a Facebook post. "Profitting from the destruction of our climate must end - funding more renewable energy must begin. We will tell the world to boycott Chase Bank until they make the necessary changes."

Former Rhode Island State Representative Aaron Regunberg also attended the protest to show his support for boycotting Chase and its credit cards until its stops funding fossil fuel projects.

"We can have continued human civilization on this, our one and only planet, or we can have corporations like JP Morgan Chase continue to bankroll climate apocalypse," said Regunberg. "We can’t have both."
