Ground Broken for RI's First Sonic

After years of watching Sonic TV commercials but having no Sonics, dirt is flying in Smithfield to change all that.

Shovels went into the ground at the empty former Wendy’s on Putnam Pike in Smithfield on Wednesday to mark the start of construction on Rhode Island’s first Sonic Drive-In.

The restaurant, famous for drive-up service and staff that might roll up to your car on skates to bring you your burgers and shakes, is coming to Smithfield later this year.

The new franchise owners, Bob and Sharon Bowen plan to offer both drive-up and indoor seating at the new restaurant.

Rhode Islanders, for years, have seen commercials for the popular chain for years. It just so happens that Bob and Sharon saw them too and wondered why they were always on TV even though the closest one was a daytrip away.

They called to inquire and learned that part of the reason was to attract a couple like Bob and Sharon Bowen, who now find themselves under pressure to deliver something many have anticipated for years.

“They do that on purpose, so people will call them to inquire,” Sharon told the Providence Journal. “Two years later, here we are.”

On Wednesday, motorists beeped and waved as the family broke ground at the site, which will undergo a transformation. The existing building will be refitted and adjusted and the landscaping and lot will undergo a total makeover to accommodate the drive-up spots.

The best way to keep tabs on the upcoming opening date, which should be before the end of August, is to follow the restaurant on Facebook.

The company first announced plans in January to expand in the New England area and it’s part of an ongoing effort to steer growth across America.

Sonic now operates 3,500 drive-in locations and says it serves 3 million customers every day. It plans to open nearly 30 new franchises across the country this year alone.
