Update: Starbucks Solves Register Problem before Saturday Morning
Stores closed early on Friday after a massive register outage that might extend into Saturday.

Update: The register problem was resolved before the start of business Saturday morning.
“The point of sale register outage has been resolved and all Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada are opening for business today as usual,” the company said in a statement. “Our Evolution Fresh and Teavana Tea Bar stores are also opening as scheduled. As previously stated, the outage was caused by an internal failure during a daily system refresh and was not the result of an external breach. We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.”

Starbucks registers across the country and Canada quit working Friday evening, causing many of them to close early and others to remain open with extremely limited service. In some some cases, the coffee was on the house.
Starbucks said a system refresh of its register system caused the outage but the company had no estimate on when the problem would be fixed. That means you might be out of luck if your Saturday routine includes a trip to the place named after the chief mate on the Pequod.

Starbucks has 25 locations in Rhode Island, including locations in hotels, Target stores and T.F. Green Airport in Warwick.
“We are actively working to resolve the outage,” the company said in a statement. “Our stores that have not already closed for the evening are closing early ... We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience or confusion and will update this statement once systems are back online. This outage also affects our Evolution Fresh and Teavana stores.”
