Pawtucket Teen Charged With Illegal Gun Possession In Smithfield

Smithfield police said a loaded, 9mm handgun was found in the pocket of the driver's door during questioning for drug possession.

SMITHFIELD, RI —A Pawtucket teen was charged with possession of a firearm without a license and marijuana possession after Smithfield police said they found the gun while questioning the woman about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Police said Deanna Dent, 18, was seen in a car blocking the entrance to the Georgiaville Village Green on Whipple Avenue during a routine patrol of the area. Officers said there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle when they approached it and Dent was the sole occupant.

Police said Dent was asked to step out of the car, and while they were questioning her a 9mm handgun was spotted in the pocket of the driver's side door. Police said the gun was loaded with a bullet in the chamber. Police said they also found a small bag with marijuana in it in one of the center cup holders.

Police said Dent told them that it was her brother's car and that she did not have any marijuana.

Dent was taken into custody without incident and held overnight for arraignment.
