Smithfield Gas Leak Closes Douglas Pike
Road closure lasts 12 hours as crews work on Route 7.

SMITHFIELD, RI — Smithfield police said Douglas Pike was expected to be closed for "at least several hours" Tuesday afternoon due to a gas leak as a leak detected around noon forced the shutdown until after midnight.
The leak closed Route 7 between Maureen Drive and Whipple Road.
Smithfield police advised drivers to avoid the area Tuesday afternoon.

Update: Smithfield police said about 4 p.m. that the hope is to get the road open by around 8, but at 9:15 updated that the road would be closed until after midnight.
The road finally opened about 1 a.m.
