Smithfield Police Department Praised For Overdose Prevention
The department was given a citation from Governor Gina Raimondo along with a $5,000 grant that will be used for prevention efforts.

SMITHFIELD, RI — The Smithfield Police Department is being praised for taking steps to prevent opioid overdoses in the town, receiving a citation from Governor Gina Raimondo and a $5,000 grant that will go towards further prevention efforts.
The department established a "comprehensive" Overdose Prevention Response Plan, the citation said, that is up to the state standard.
"The Town of Smithfield has demonstrated apt leadership and a laudable commitment to shifting the misperceptions of addition by promoting prevention, treatment, recovery and rescue," the citation reads. "Even more adminrably, this work is underpinned by Smithfield's dedication to saving the lives of Rhode Islanders."

Along with the citation, the department received a $5,000 grant, which they said will go towards promoting overdose "prevention, rescue, treatment and recovery" buy purchasing at-home drug disposal bags and Naloxone, also known as Narcan.
