The Smithfield Police Department is urging residents to use caution after an uptick in items being stolen out of unlocked vehicles.

SMITHFIELD, RI — The Smithfield Police Department is warning residents to be careful about locking their cars after a rash of thefts in recent days. Police said that the surge has extended throughout northern Rhode Island.

Police urge residents to make sure their vehicles are locked and not to leave valuables in unattended vehicles. Police said the thefts have mostly occurred from cars left unlocked.
