Smithfield Urges Gov. Raimondo To Ease Coronavirus Restrictions

The town is the first in the Rhode Island to formally request the governor to ease current restrictions on small businesses.

SMITHFIELD, RI — The Smithfield Town Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to pass a resolution that formally urges Gov. Gina Raimondo to ease the current COVID-19 restrictions on small businesses and allow them to return to their normal hours of operation.

Although Cranston was the first Rhode Island town to introduce a similar resolution, it has not yet been voted on and Smithfield has become the first town to pass such a request.

Rhode Island's safety regulations currently requires restaurants, bars, gyms, recreational facilities, and personal services to close by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and indoor and outdoor venues to run at 25% capacity.

The resolution does not have the power to change COVID-19 restrictions for small businesses, but will rather pressure Raimondo to reevaluate the latest limitations and regulations.
