After Gas Leak at Limetree, A Call To Report Symptoms
The Health Commissioner is calling on the public to report negative health symptoms resulting from the gas leak at Limetree Bay refinery.
ST. CROIX, USVI — The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) has confirmed that higher-than-normal levels of hydrogen sulfide are to blame for the noxious smell in the Frederiksted area last week. The hydrogen sulfide was released by the Limetree Bay refinery due to what they've called an "operating upset" in their sulfur processing.
In response, the Environmental Protection Agency and the DPNR are investigating Limetree Bay operations. And VI Health Commissioner Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion, RN, has put out a call to the public:
“Any potential threat to the health of the public is always a concern of mine. As DPNR continues to monitor environmental effects, I encourage you to report symptoms like headaches, nausea, and especially those of a respiratory nature to your healthcare provider.”

According to the Health Department, even low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide can cause harm. It can irritate the eyes, nose and/or throat. And people with asthma or other breathing issues can experience difficulty breathing.
