Elsa Strengthens To Hurricane But Won't Hit USVI
Elsa's maximum sustained winds have increased to nearly 75 mph, which means the tropical storm now qualifies as a hurricane.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Tropical Storm Elsa has been upgraded to a Hurricane after surface observations indicated maximum sustained winds of nearly 75 mph with gusts of up to 86 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricane conditions are occurring in Barbados and are expected in other portions of the Windward and Leeward Islands.
The Meteorological Service of Barbados has issued Hurricane Warning for Barbados, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines. The Meteorological Service of St. Lucia has issued a Hurricane Warning for St. Lucia.
No advisories are in effect for the Virgin Islands as Elsa is expected to pass south of the territory. However, the USVI may experience some wind and rain.

Hurricane conditions are possible over portions of Hispaniola on Saturday, but the storm should go back to being a tropical storm by the time it reaches Jamaica on Saturday night.
