U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS —The Virgin Islands Department of Health announced Sunday, May 15, that children ages 12-15 can be vaccinated for COVID-19 locally. Previously, the VIDOH had an age minimum of 16 to receive the vaccine.

This update comes on the heels of the Food and Drug Administration's announcement that they expanded the use for the Pfizer vaccine to children 12 and up. In a statement released Sunday, May 16, the Department of Health expressed, "this latest development will lower the risk of children becoming severely ill with the COVID-19 virus."

Dr. Janis Valmond, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Health, encouraged parents to vaccinate their children. She said, “This pandemic has interrupted the lives of everyone--especially children who have not been able to learn or socialize normally. This opportunity will help us get on the road normalcy."
